Low Light Houseplants

Low light houseplants are adaptable to spaces with minimal natural sunlight. Generally, they thrive in areas that receive little to no direct sun, such as corners of rooms, hallways, or offices with artificial lighting. While they still need some light, they can survive in north-facing windows, shaded rooms, or locations where sunlight is filtered through curtains.

SUNLIGHT NEEDS:

Minimum Light Requirement: 2–4 hours of low or filtered light daily.
Best Placement: North-facing windows, dim corners, or rooms with artificial lighting.

Bright Indirect Houseplants

Indirect light houseplants thrive in bright, but filtered or diffused sunlight rather than direct exposure. In particular, they receive light reflected off walls or filtered through sheer curtains rather than the intense rays of the sun. These plants do best in east-facing windows or a few feet away from a bright window.

SUNLIGHT NEEDS:

Minimum Light Requirement: 4–6 hours of bright, indirect light daily.
Best Placement: Near an east-facing window, behind sheer curtains, or in a well-lit room.
Signs of Too Much Light: Leaves may scorch or turn brown.
Signs of Too Little Light: Faded or stunted growth, leggy stems.

Bright Direct Light Houseplants

Direct light houseplants thrive in bright, unfiltered sunlight for most of the day. In sum, these plants need at least 4–6 hours of direct sun exposure daily to grow and stay healthy. They are best suited for south- or west-facing windows where the sunlight streams in without obstruction.

SUNLIGHT NEEDS:

Minimum Light Requirement: 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Signs of Too Much Light: Leaves turning brown, crispy, or scorched.
Signs of Too Little Light: Leggy growth, slow development, or pale leaves.
