Who knew there were so many options of potting mixes and soil amendments? Knowing which is a match for your project at hand, can leave you feeling paralyzed with indecision.

We’re here to breakdown the options and give you ways to incorporate the various packaged soils and amendments. Keep in mind, the mixes described below CAN be used in a number of ways, but we’ve detailed how WE like to refer our clients to them.
Should you forget what you read, rest assured — our friendly cashiers are trained to guide you on the fly and leave you saying “that’s the one!”

 

For Houseplants:

Hoffman’s Potting Soil: 

As a Kennedy’s favorite, Hoffman’s Potting soil is an organic choice for repotting houseplants, annuals, vegetables, and herbs.  We love the rich mixture of Canadian sphagnum peat moss, composted forest products, perlite, fine sand, and naturalized fertilizer, offering both fast and slow release of nitrogen. In order to use Hoffmans for new plants that need a refresh, gently loosen around the rootball of a plant. Then, replace the soil underneath and around the rootball reinvigorate plant’s growth environment.

For the purpose of containers, Kennedy’s recommends this Organic option for growing annual, perennial, or edible containers where clients are looking for a mix where plants may need an extra edge.

  • Hanging Baskets and Windowboxes
  • Indoor and Outdoor Containers – terrific for growing vegetables!

A great all-purpose potting soil made with natural and organic ingredients such as lobster, kelp, compost, perlite, and sphagnum peat. It is designed for potting indoor and outdoor container plants. Water and fertilize less with this nutrient rich, compost based potting soil. It is OMRI listed for use in organic gardens.

Fafard Ultra Outdoor Planting Mix:

For the purpose of shade containers, Kennedy’s recommends Fafard Ultra Outdoor Planting mix for growing annual or perennial containers. Shade container’s benefit from the added drainage of this mix, where shade container’s are less prone to drying out and plants may not like having wet roots.

For Fruits and Veg:

An organic container option for growing edible, annual, or perennial containers for plants with standard needs (i.e. herb containers, tea gardens, raised/elevated vegetable beds)

Coast of Maine Grower’s Mix (Stonington Blend):

Strongly recommended for edible or large plant container gardening that focuses on heavy-feeders. i.e. fruit trees in containers

Coast of Maine Organic Products Stonington Blend Grower’s Mix is a complex “super soil” designed for high performance container growing. It works with tomatoes, and, where growing cannabis and medical marijuana is legal, growers have reported tremendous results. This soil incorporates mycorrhizal fungi, kelp, fish bone and alfalfa meal, as well as worm castings, peat, coir and lobster compost. When growing in 15 gallon containers,  there is no need for additional nutrients.

It is OMRI listed for use in organic gardens

 

In Ground/Everything Else:

Fafard Ultra Outdoor Planting Mix:

We recommend the “Fafard Purple Bag” when amending the surrounding soil putting in new landscape plants: perennials, trees or shrubs.Fafard Ultra Outdoor Planting Mix

Being high in organic matter, this quality planting mix has been specifically formulated for garden and landscape planting. It contains Canadian Sphagnum peat moss and aged softwood bark to add structure and needed organic matter to clay-rich or sandy soils.

  • Outdoor Containers

 

Coast of Maine Lobster Compost:

We recommended this straight compost for soils that are heavy in clay or sand, lack organic matter, and need rejuvenating. Specifically recommended for vegetable beds or in-ground gardens, and planting new fruiting bushes. Mix Kennedy's COAST OF MAINE LOBSTER COMPOST50:50 – naturalized soil with an amendment.

Coast of Maine Organic Products Quoddy Blend Lobster Compost is made with lobster shells, compost and sphagnum peat moss. It is a dark-brown, complex soil filled with everything your plants need for healthy growth. The lobster compost drains well and is an ideal soil conditioner for existing beds that need reinvigorating, thus supporting flower, perennial and vegetable gardens.

  • Planting amendment for conditioning flower beds and borders
  • Planting amendment for vegetable gardens, herbs and annuals. Terrific for adding to vegetables gardens to replenish nutrients!
