Uses

Cape daisies, like pansies, are tolerant of the cooler temps of early spring. Osteos can be planted outside in New England usually from about mid-April and bloom reliably through June. They will make it through the summer, but flower stronger in cooler seasons of spring & fall.  Most varieties are considered a medium filler that grower about 8-12”. Osteos are usually admired most up close in containers where the flowers can be appreciated.

Care

Give your Osteos plenty of sun for maximum flower production. These plants can be deadheaded by trimming spent blooms to encourage the plants to continue to bloom. Even though plants are “self” cleaning, removing old flowers makes them look better. Daisies are generally considered cold tolerant and can technically tolerate temps as lower than 30 degrees, but there is far less risk by planting them permanently outside later in April when the threat of hard frosts are less likely.

Insider tips

Some customers plant these and other cool season annuals in lightweight planters that can be moved inside on evenings predicted to be much below the mid-30’s. Others buy them early for best selection, but keep them in their original pots and store them in the garage at night until the temps warm up. It is best to give them warm bright sun during the day.
