Features & Benefits – Petunias are a very old school flowering annual.  But most of the new school school varieties do not need deadheading like older varieties that produced seed.  So no need to go around removing spent flowers, as new flowers emerge and take their place. Petunias typically flower from May until the first hard frost of the fall, usually in October.  They provide a ton of non-stop color to the landscape or in containers.  Each year new flowers colors become available.  It is fun to try some of the new varieties.  Just pay attention to the size and shape as they vary depending on the use.  We suggest using the smaller, slower growing varieties for small containers and window boxes and save the larger, faster growing types for large containers and in garden beds to maximize the impact.

Care: The easiest way to grow petunias is in garden beds where they have ample soil to spread their roots as wide as the plant itself.  Petunias can also be grown in containers and window boxes.  Like all annuals they should grown in containers that are big enough to have enough soil to support how big the top of the plant is.  The bigger the pot the less watering.  The smaller the planter and the larger the plant the more quantity and frequency of water is required.  Huge plants in small pots might look like a good value, but often it means a lot more work.  Petunias love fertilizer.  We suggest at planting time to fill a watering can with 1-2 gallons of water, then mix in a tablespoon of Organic Plant Magic (click here) and thoroughly soak the roots of your new plants and surrounding soil with this solution. This will get the roots off to a great start. Then monthly use a small handful of True Organic All Purpose Fertilizer (click here) throughout the growing season. If you experience any issues with your petunias be sure to let us know.  If you see what looks like bite marks taken out of your flowers or the flowers disappear as fast as they open you might be experiencing a problem with budworms.
