Let’s Dance Sky View Hydrangea

So many people love the the traditional blue Hydrangea flowers that coastal New England is known for.  Endless Summer is typically the blue Hydrangea that all others are compared to.  ‘Sky View’ is a newer Proven Winner branded plant, part of the Let’s Dance Series.  It is known to be just as reliable to bloom and more compact compared to Endless Summer.  Like all “large leaf” or “macrophylla” species of Hydrangeas, they prefer morning sun and shade from the hot afternoon sun.  Sky View grows about 3-4′ tall and wide, just a few years after planting.  The flowers are usually pale to medium blue in the naturally acidic soils of the South Shore. But if the soil is alkaline or lime is added they can turn pale to medium pink.  Hydrangeas are one of the longest blooming shrubs, another reason for their popularity.  Hydrangeas are also valued for their value as cut flowers.  They also make great gifts.

At Kennedy’s, to keep things simple, we advise not to prune large leaf hydrangeas to minimize the chances of a bummer summer of no Hydrangea macrophylla flowers.  Cold winters are also a cause of no flowers.
