Uses

Pansies are a popular plant because of the early season color & fragrance that announces to you and your family & guests the arrival of your spring traditions in New England. Pansies provide terrific punch of color to your planters around the yard, porch or deck. They can also be planted in key spots in the garden such as near the mailbox or walkway entrance and wherever you want to remind yourself spring is here.  Pansies are cool season annuals that can be planted outside well before mid-May. Pansies don’t typically have the same longevity of heat loving annuals, but they do a great job of filling the gap between having empty colorless planters in late winter and when it’s time to plant heat loving annuals later in May or June.

Care

Pansies prefer as much sun in the early spring as they can get to maximize flower production. Some light shade is okay and appreciated later when temps rise. Water normally. Deadhead or remove spent flowers to promote more flowers. Try to avoid putting pansies outside too early.  Although they are cold tolerant, it is best to protect them from temps below freezing at night. Cold rain will also hurt the flowers and cause the plants to be stunted. Some people plant pansies in lightweight pots that can be brought inside on cold rainy nights. Pansies are most useful from about mid-late April through May before the heat of summer kicks in. Pansies will often survive the summer if watered properly but they do not flower as well in the heat. Most gardeners replace their pansies with heat loving annuals by mid-June.
