At this time, our garden center is organized by plant light needs. Read below for definitions of each Light Level and suggestions for your garden!

Shade-Loving Perennials

Shade-loving perennials thrive in areas with limited sunlight, adding beauty to darker garden corners or under trees. These plants perform best in spots that receive little to no direct sunlight, such as north-facing garden beds or shaded patios. While they need some indirect light, they can flourish in areas with filtered sunlight or complete shade.

SUNLIGHT NEEDS:

Minimum Light Requirement: 2–4 hours of filtered or dappled sunlight daily.
Best Placement: Under trees, shaded garden beds, or areas with indirect light.
Signs of Too Much Sun: Wilting, scorched, or yellowing leaves.
Signs of Too Little Sun: Slow growth, sparse blooms, or legginess.

Examples of Shade-Loving Perennials

Hostas (Hosta spp.) – Hardy and diverse, thriving in full shade to partial sun.
Astilbe (Astilbe spp.) – Prefers moist, shady spots and produces beautiful feathery blooms.
Heuchera (Heuchera spp.) – Known for its colorful foliage, this plant thrives in low light.
Bleeding Heart (Dicentra spp.) – A classic shade perennial with elegant, heart-shaped blooms.

For optimal growth, consider placing shade-loving perennials in areas where light is filtered through tree canopies or nearby structures.

Full-Sun Perennials

Full-sun perennials thrive in bright, sunny spots where they can soak up plenty of direct sunlight. These plants excel in areas that receive at least 6 hours of sun daily, adding vibrant color and texture to your garden. They are perfect for sunny borders, flower beds, or areas with little shade.

SUNLIGHT NEEDS:

Minimum Light Requirement: 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily.
Best Placement: Sunny garden beds, borders, or open areas with full exposure.
Signs of Too Much Shade: Stunted growth, fewer blooms, or leggy stems.
Signs of Too Much Sun: Wilting, scorched leaves, or burnt tips.

Examples of Full-Sun Perennials

Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia spp.) – Bright yellow blooms that love full sun and well-drained soil.
Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) – Hardy and drought-tolerant, with striking daisy-like flowers.
Shasta Daisy (Leucanthemum × superbum) – A cheerful, sun-loving flower perfect for sunny spaces.
Lavender (Lavandula spp.) – Thrives in full sun, adding both color and fragrance to your garden.
Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia) – A low-maintenance perennial with silvery foliage and purple-blue flowers.

For optimal blooms and health, plant full-sun perennials in areas that receive consistent, unfiltered sunlight throughout the day.
