More About Our Greenhouses

Kennedy’s has six greenhouses, four of which are heated and open year round.  Kennedy’s is one of the few true garden centers in the region to have greenhouses open during even the coldest winter months.  A trip through Kennedy’s in winter is considered by many a great tropical mini getaway.  We welcome visitors and it is not uncommon to see local art classes setting up shop to take advantage of the warmth of the greenhouses and the stunning tropical foliage and flowers.  In late winter we start bringing in pansies, bulb plants, and other cool weather annuals so that folks can get some color outside as soon as the temps stay above freezing.  The Greenhouses are even more impressive when they are literally filled to the rafters with annuals, tropicals, and colorful hanging baskets in the spring and summer seasons.  Come see for yourself!

Greenhouse #1 is home to many of our smaller houseplants and seasonal plants that can be dressed up to bring to a friend or family member.  Choose from a nice selection of plants to add color to a kitchen counter or sunny window sill or even a darker book shelf.  Orchids, Kalanchoe, African Violets, Rex Begonias, Ferns, Dracaena, and Peace Lilies are just a small sample of what can be discovered in Greenhouse #1.  Our creative Green Team members put together combinations of these items to make plant baskets and dish gardens which make terrific, long lasting “living” gifts.

Greenhouse #2 is typically where you find some of our more exotic plants.  We house unusual annuals, tropicals, and topiaries here during the busy seasons and assorted foliage plants and other interesting finds in the off peak seasons.  In winter it is stocked wall to wall with poinsettias, cyclamen, and other seasonal plants.

In between Greenhouse 1 and 2 you will find Marty the Macaw and Keoke our African Grey Parrot.  Kids and kids at heart visit regularly just to see and talk to these splendid birds.

Greenhouse #3 is now home to many of our containers including terra cotta, lightweight and frost resistant pots, Campania pottery, and window boxes.  If you like to keep it local, select a piece of  Coldbrooke Pottery hand thrown by Scituate artisan Abby Fassanella.  Tropicals and geraniums add a splash of color in spring and summer.

Greenhouse #4 is typically dedicated to Proven Winners annuals.  We stock one of the best selections of reliable and colorful high-performance plants.  Our buyers do a great job of keeping this greenhouse full.  In spring we get multiple shipments of Proven Winners each week because of their popularity.  In winter we convert this space into Santa’s Workshop – this is where our creative team puts together our spectacular holiday wreaths and Filler Uppers.

Our Shade House holds our shade-tolerant annuals from spring through fall.  In September we switch over to fall decor items including a marvelous selection of pumpkins and ornamental squash, bales of hay, and cornstalks.  And of course we carry all sizes of glorious fall mums, including field-grown mums from a local grower.  Moving into November, we transition to winter decor.  If you haven’t seen our custom wreaths, swags, Filler Uppers, and Custom Containers, you don’t know what you’re missing!

Greenhouses #5 & #6 are our cold frames.  In winter, the sun keeps our overwintering plants just warm enough to survive a New England Winter in a pot.  In spring and summer, they provide space for receiving, growing, and storing plants.
